Two stages, two weeks each

I began this project with a wide question for researching: how can we facilitate giving between people in the same neighbourhoods? I conducted an exploratory research phase to better understand the space at large. I then chose to focus on a small but consistent output of the research, creating a mobile app that creates opportunities of giving between neighbours in the same apartment building.

Context

There are already opportunities for giving within a community, both digital and in person, among strangers and those we already know. I focused on the functionality of online communities like BUNZ and Buy Nothing for inspiration.

Research

In Winter 2020, I performed needs-gathering research on community giving. I interviewed two people in a non-structured way, which informed a questionnaire that received 43 submissions. From here, I was able to collect patterns in response.

Takeaway

From this research, I learned that it was important for users to have different experiences for when they were browsing versus searching for a specific item. Sizing was crucial to the user’s experience, especially for users that were used to their size not being represented.

Users wanted to be able to understand the cut of the item; whether the clothing was tight, loose, curvy, or stretchy to understand how the item would look on their body. I opted to take this information to inform my design.

Define

With all of this information, I wanted to hone in on a specific use and a set of features that I could reliably focus on within the time I was given for my next project. I thought about problems that could reliably be solved with a mobile application.
